Each year, prior to the KCA Annual Convention in January, the Kansas Contractors Association and the Kansas Department of Transportation work to identify those projects and industry partners that are worthy of receiving a partnering award for a specific project from the previous year. The objective of this effort is to recognize real excellence in partnering among all parties.

The KDOT/KCA Construction Industry Training Program started classes early with the new OSHA Crane Rigging and Signaling Standards that went into effect in August of 2010. The training season continued to be brisk as the cold weather arrived.

The KCA Construction Education Foundation recently awarded $28,000 in grants to six Kansas institutions. The foundation board met in October to review grant requests and determine which education programs would receive funding for their programs.

It’s been just over a month since Governor Sam Brownback and KDOT Secretary Deb Miller announced the $1.8 billion T-WORKS expansion and modernization projects during a five city tour. While Kansas is fortunate to have a 3rd consecutive 10-year transportation program, the new program is significantly smaller than the $3.9 billion CTP and the 4.1 billion CHP programs that preceded it.

Contractors and other businesses will reap the benefits of a new state workers compensation bill which was signed into law April 18th by Governor Sam Brownback. How big the benefits will be won’t be known for about 2-3 years, but it appears the changes are very significant and will enhance the business climate in the state.
