June 11, 2009--Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson, US Dept. of Heath and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, VP Joe Biden, Clarkson Construction VP W.E. For the second consecutive year, KC3 hosted the Construction Learning Center at the Kansas State Fair. The purpose of the booth is encourage youth from across Kansas to consider a construction career. The learning center consisted of free, hands-on construction related activities for kids of all ages. Activities range from building blocks and coloring for younger children; to building bridges and sculptures with PVC pipe; to driving screws with power drills. Among the most popular activies were operating the controls of a computer simulated grader as well as playing back hoe golf with a real CAT backhoe.
KC3, the Kansas Construction Careers Coalition was created to generate interest and promote careers in the construction industry through career fairs, after school programs and other educational channels. The KCA Summer Fest Golf Tournament was held at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. The sold out tournament drew contractors, supplier sponsors, government employees and consulting engineers.

2nd Annual KCA Safety Picnic was held Friday, June 20th, 2008 at Lake Shawnee. Participants received an update from Karen Wagamanabout the KCA Construction Industry Training Program as well as details about the new Heavy Construction Program at Kaw Area Technical School from Richard White. Safety professionals also participated in a round table discussion about pertinent topics and enjoyed grilled burgers. Families members were also invited and KCA presented hats to the attendees.

KCA offered our first NCCO Crane Operator Certification Course in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties Kansas in May 2008 through the Joint Construction Industry Training (CIT) program with KDOT. The classroom portion took place at Cabela's in Kansas City. The practical exam took place at the wastewater treatment plant at the Douglas L Smith Middle Basin Waste Water Treatment Plant in Overland Park. The class was taught by the AGC of Wisconsin. Eleven contractors took part in the course. Additional crane operator certification and crane operator safety courses were offered in Wichita and taught by George of Dondlinger and Sons Construction.

Plan reading, staking and surveying was one of the most popular courses offered during the winter Construction Industry Training (CIT) Program. The class offered an insight to how to read KDOT plans and basic surveying techniques from Contractors and KDOT and consulting engineers.

KCA participated as a sponsor of the KC3 Workforce Development Summit. Two sessions were offered in Wichita and Topeka providing participants with information related to developing today's workforce, incorporating safety and training into your everyday tasks, working with Hispanic workers and developing an apprenticeship program.
